After 7 years in business I have decided it was time to bind off project Urban Knitting Studio so that I can work on other projects that I’ve wanted to pursue. I feel lucky that my original 5-year plan lasted an additional 2 years. It’s timely that the closing would fall on the “wool” anniversary and almost to the exact day I opened.
I want to thank everyone who has helped to make this project such a success, most of whom I’ve known from day one. But Urban Knitting Studio would not be what it is had it not been for the incredibly talented and kind-hearted gals – Ginny and Nancy. How lucky was I to have met them?!
Our last day will be March 31. Starting tomorrow all merchandise will be discounted 30% and up. Most furniture and fixtures will also be for sale. Hope we get a chance to see you all. If you have gift certificates and/or store credits, please make sure to redeem them by the last day of business. And I encourage all of you to support our local Bay Area knitting stores so that we have a place to satisfy our fiber addiction!

We’ll be closed March 2 – 4 and March 9 – 10. Normal business hours will be observed March 5 – 7.
Tuesday – Friday 11:00 – 6:30
Saturday – Sunday 12:00 – 5:00
The name alone could be misconstrued if this was not a knitting and crocheting blog. For those who want a quickie with something chunky yet soft, “Magnum” delivers. Since most of the colors in Twinkle “Soft Chunky” will not be available until summer, we brought back an old favorite that was a hit when we first opened 7 years ago. Good thing Cascade kept it around in most of its fabulous colors. With 123 yards and #17 or #19 needles (or larger), scarf gratification is a mere 2 hours away.

Cowls are still a hit. And it seems like a new and more creative version comes out weekly. Here’s another inventive pattern, designed by Ginny, that’s fun to wear and knit. If you’re new to short row shaping, this pattern will give you lots of practice. Get your free pattern with purchase of yarn.

Unfolded
Eco Wool by Cascade has become one of our best selling yarns. When it was first introduced here a few years ago, the yarn was a well known secret amongst the regulars. With 478 yards of 100% undyed wool it looks (and feels) like a heavy door stop. And the best part is that for those being cost conscious, it won’t break the bank at under $18. Karen bought a skein and thought it would make a great birthday cake for herself so her friend Mandy stuck some candles into it and off they went to celebrate.

This is the one project that draws lots of cutesy oohs and aahs. Although I’m not into anything too “cute” this was a fun project to knit, and it’s different than your typical stuffed animal. Knitted in Blue Sky Organic Cotton, it takes 2 skeins of yarn, and the pattern has instructions for 3 different chicken designs and sizes.

I saw this pattern in Interweave Knits 2009 “Holiday Gifts” edition and had to make it for my first full height, real Christmas tree. Having grown up with fake trees I never gave any thought to hiding the very unattractive tree dish. The pattern is called “Sunburst Throw” by Daniel Yuhas whose website has instructions for a very cool cast on method called “Diasappearing Loop Cast On.” I knitted the skirt using 3 skeins (478 yds. per skein) of Cascade Eco Wool. My version is larger than what the pattern instructed, and I opted to not do the ruffle bind off. In the end I had 969 stitches and a finished piece that was equivalent to a man’s x-large sweater. I would have made it larger but given that we’ve had our tree for almost 2 weeks and that Christmas is a week away, I had to stop so we could decorate it! And I ran out of yarn.

Finished Tree
I love posting the creative project knit by our wonderful customers. Cynthia’s mouse and Priscilla’s egg and nest ornaments are perfect, whimsical adornments to liven any Christmas tree. Ellen whipped up UKS’s Linen Stitch Headband Hat in an orange version for her sister.

We will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 25 – Friday, Nov. 27 for turkey day. Happy Thanksgiving!
